big sur

big sur is the stretch of coastline on highway 1 between carmel and san simeon (where the hearst castle is located). with the number of times i've been to carmel, i can't believe this was my first time to venture farther south. grace and i had an incredible long weekend exploring the area. below are some pics and recs if you ever plan on going

one of the great things about big sur is that is has both coastline

and redwood forests

there are tons of short day hikes scattered all over the area. if you're looking for a short, easy hike which ends with a good view, try valley view. it ends at a wooden bench with great views of the valley. here's a link to good hiking guide

also, check out pfeiffer beach. just remember it's probably the most popular beach in big sur and the parking lot can fill up quickly during peak hours. also it's a bit tricky to find. look for the only unmarked dirt road heading west located between the post office and the pfeiffer state park entrance

although i'm a big fan of the 17 mile drive, i think my favorite stretch of highway 1 is south of big sur on the way to san simeon. definitely check it out.

a couple other suggestions...
-big sur bakery: yummy wood-fired pizzas and fresh veggies
-places to stay: lucia lodge for pretty views or ventana and post ranch if you really wanna go bling-bling. for an awesome private rental, i strongly recommend the studio at casa en las secoyas
